Everything One Needs To Know About What Is Sperm?
As tiny a cell can get, when one actually thinks about it is a sperm. However, these tiny units are very essential for the process of reproduction, as life can definitely not go on without them. Sperms hols 50% responsibility for the process of reproduction. The question might arise in the minds of a lot of people about the details of sperms and to find out what is sperm. Males or men of the society produce almost millions of these very cells every single day, however, it only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg, and in turn be responsible for the creation of life.
The definition of sperm
The male reproductive cell or what can also be referred to as the gamete is the sperm. Gamete in itself means that the cell is only a half out of a whole. The questions such as what are the functions of a sperm and what is sperm might arise in the minds of many. It is the combination of a sperm or a male gamete with a female gamete, or commonly known as an egg, that results in the formation of a human embryo. The sperm has three parts namely the head, the midsection as well as the tail.
The head of the sperm
The head of the sperm consists of what is called the chromatin, which is also the main DNA material responsible for making up of the chromosomes.
Under any normal circumstances, both the sperm as well as the egg contain 23 chromosomes. Thus, the combination of the sperm and the egg results in the formation of an embryo, which in turn has 46 chromosomes.
The head of the sperm is covered by a cap which is referred to by the doctors as an acrosome. This acrosome is essential as it has proteins which are vital for the sperm, and helps the sperm to penetrate the most outer layer of the female gamete or the egg.
The midsection of the sperm
The sperm has a midsection which is vital as it houses the mitochondria which produces the energy. The sperm cell requires to move and the necessary energy required for the same is extracted from the mitochondria.
The tail of the sperm
The sperm tail, is also called the flagellum. It serves the very purpose of helping the sperm to move. It propels forward the sperm, causing it to fuse with the egg, for the very purpose of fertilization.
The production of sperms
Now that it has been discussed that what is sperm, it is imperative to find out about the production of the sperm. The testicles, or the male reproductive organs are responsible for the formation of the sperms. Testosterone, or the sex hormone is also produced by the testicles.
The very process of the creation of sperm cells is called spermatogenesis. The process is initiated within the testicles in what are called the seminiferous tubules. Spermatocytes are produces by these tubules.
